Disability insurance shields you and your family from an unforeseen illness or event that leaves you powerless to work and earn money. Usually, disability insurance returns between 60% and 85% of your monthly income, up to the highest amount, for a designated time if you:

  • temporarily can’t work
  • are forever disabled due to an injury or illness

Permanent relates to the nature of the disability. It does not mean that you’ll get privileges for the rest of your life.

If you’re looking for disability insurance services in Canada, we’ve got you covered. No matter whether you’re an employer or self-employed, our dedicated health insurance agents are at your disposal. We offer you amazing plans that fits your budget and protects you forever!

What is disability insurance?

Disability insurance offers risk coverage for the lost income due to negligence to work in case of any permanent or temporary disability. This type of insurance would help you provide a part of your lost income and medical expenses. If you happened to meet with an accident that led to disability, this type of insurance greatly helps. It covers sick leave and offers disability advantages for short and long-term periods.

Types of Disability Insurance Services in Canada

Short-term

Short-term disability coverage usually provides advantages for up to 6 months while you’re unwell or injured.

If your company has a short-term disability plan, you can make your claim through your disability plan. Employers aren’t expected to provide paid sick leave, and each employer is different.

Talk with your employer’s HR staff for details on your plan, including any sick time or holiday time policies that might suit.

If you don’t have short-term disability coverage, and your employer does not provide one, you may be qualified for Employment Insurance (EI) sickness benefits.

To be eligible for EI sickness benefits, you must:

  • usually have used all of your sick leave
  • have worked enough hours
Long-term

Long-term disability insurance privileges generally begin when the following interests end:

  • sick leave benefits from your employer
  • short-term disability insurance
  • EI benefits

Most long-term disability plans will reimburse 60% to 70% of your regular income.

Each disability plan is unique. Some may provide disability benefits for up to two years if you cannot return to the job you had before becoming disabled. After two years, you may proceed to receive benefits only if you’re unable to work at any position.

What are the benefits of Disability Insurance?

  • Other sources of disability benefits

You may also be qualified for benefits from the Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) and Canada Pension Plan (CPP) to add to your income when you’re incapable of working.

The CPP disability compensation and QPP disability compensation are available to people who have subscribed to those plans and cannot regularly work at any job because of a disability.

  • Offsetting of benefits

Any gains you receive from one insurance plan can offset the income you get from an extra insurance plan.

If you have various insurance plans, your income while on unfitness will usually not be higher than 60% to 85% of your monthly payments.

Many long-term disability insurance plans decrease your benefit amount as soon as you start getting other causes of disability income.

  • Disability insurance benefits and taxes

Usually, if you pay the entire amount of the disability premium yourself, your disability gains will be tax-free. This may bring your income while on disability closer to your existing take-home pay.

If your employer pays all or part of the disability premium, your disability gains will be subject to income taxes.
